  18. <p>     A drug ring in West Columbia, S.C., got its goods in a
  19. macabre way: from dying cancer victims. In some cases, devious
  20. dealers posing as good Samaritans stole Dilaudid pain pills and
  21. morphine from patients, leaving their victims with only aspirin
  22. to ease their suffering. But police say as many as 20 patients
  23. at the Veterans Affairs hospital sold their drugs to dealers.
  24. One patient convinced VA officials that he needed 60 Dilaudid
  25. a month to treat his severe arthritis. Another made a $1,200
  26. profit, even though the going rate was $10 a pill, a fraction
  27. of the $25-to-$45 street value.

  29. <p>     Five dealers were arrested and six more were being sought,
  30. but police do not plan to prosecute the patients. Some have
  31. already died. For the rest, said investigating officer P.K.
  32. O'Neill, "the simple fact is that it's just a matter of time
  33. before they pass away."
